Google Docs Comment Resolver

What it does

Automatically resolves Google Docs comments when the associated task in your project management system is marked complete, keeping doc comments in sync with actual task status.

Why I recommend it

Comments pile up in collaborative docs, creating noise and making it hard to see what’s actually still actionable. Auto-resolving completed items keeps docs clean and focused on open issues.

Expected benefits

  • Clean, actionable comment threads
  • No manual comment cleanup needed
  • Clear connection between docs and tasks
  • Better document collaboration

How it works

Task marked complete in ClickUp/Asana -> extract task ID from description -> find linked Google Doc comment (via task ID in comment) -> resolve comment via API -> optionally add final comment with completion details.

Quick start

When creating tasks from doc comments, add task ID to the comment thread. When tasks complete, manually resolve the comment. After a week, automate the connection between task completion and comment resolution.

Level-up version

Create tasks automatically from doc comments containing keywords (“TODO:”, “@task”). Include completion notes in resolved comment. Reopen comment if task is reopened. Track time from comment to resolution. Summary report of doc activity.

Tools you can use

Documents: Google Docs

Project management: ClickUp, Asana, Jira, Notion

Automation: Zapier, Make, Google Apps Script

Task linking: Custom tagging system

Also works with

Collaboration: Notion, Confluence for similar comment workflows

PM tools: Monday.com, Trello, Linear

Documents: Microsoft Word Online (limited API support)

Technical implementation solution

  • No-code: ClickUp task completed -> Zapier extracts task ID from description -> manually resolve Google Doc comment (limited API support in no-code tools).
  • API-based: Task webhook on completion -> parse task for doc comment ID -> Google Docs API resolve comment -> optionally add reply with completion timestamp and user.

Where it gets tricky

Linking comments to tasks reliably (requires discipline), handling comments with multiple tasks, Google Docs API limitations for comment management, and avoiding resolving comments prematurely.
